Tokyo Paralympics: Indian table tennis player Bhavinaben Patel signed off with a historic silver medal at her first Paralympic Games after losing 0-3 to world number one Chinese paddler Ying Zhou in the women’s singles category 4 final in Tokyo on Sunday. The 34-year-old Patel’s impressive performance at the Games ended in a 7-11, 5-11, 6-11 loss to two-time gold medalist Zhou in the women’s singles summit clash that lasted 19 minutes. Patel had lost to Zhou in his first group stage match earlier this week.
Against a rival with five Paralympic medals, including a gold medal in singles in Beijing and London. Patel struggled because she could not run her own strategy.
Patel, who was diagnosed with polio when she was 12 months old, is a world no. 3 Miao Zhang of China reached the semifinals on Saturday with victories of 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8.
In the quarterfinals on Friday, Patel confirmed medal and script history by defeating the 2016 Rio Paralympic gold medalist and world number two Borislava Peri Rankov of Serbia.
