On Sunday, Health Minister said that UK government had abandoned plans for people in England to show vaccine passports to enter crowded events such as nightclubs.

Government had earlier said they would be released later this month, despite opposition from businesses in region and some Conservative legislators.

Announcing U-turn, Health Minister Sajid Javid said that Government does not consider move necessary in current virus situation, citing high vaccine uptake.

“While we have looked at this properly and we should reserve it as a potential option, I am happy to say that we will not go ahead with vaccine passport plan,” Javid told BBC.

UK has given two doses of vaccine to more than 80 percent of people over age of 16 and is expected to announce soon whether it will expand vaccination to those aged 12 to 15.

UK Government: Increase vaccine uptake

Health Minister said that making documents mandatory at leisure sites made him uncomfortable, as some opponents have called it a potential violation of civil liberties.

“I never liked idea of telling people that you should show your papers or do something that is just a daily activity,” Javid said.

A sudden change came after Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi told parliament last week that plan was going ahead later in September when all people over 18 had time to get both jabs.

Javid told Times Radio that main deciding factor was that, as some other countries have introduced vaccine passports, England has seen “a steady increase in our (vaccine) rates.”

“People have talked about certification to increase vaccinations. I’m not sure we need to do that,” he said.

Announcement comes after Scotland’s developed government-approved issuance of vaccine passports for nightclubs and concert attendees on Thursday.

Asked to comment on media reports that government would also end travel restrictions, including expensive PCR tests before departure and upon return from overseas trips, Javid told Sky News he wanted to do so “as soon as possible.”

Javid confirmed that government would announce proposals to repeal some emergency powers granted during a pandemic, including closing businesses and schools.

“We don’t need them, we should get rid of them,” he told Times Radio.
